2017 Package Bee Prices

It is the 2017 beekeeping season, and I can’t believe the price of package bees! It has been two years since I have kept bees, and almost 4 years since I have bought a package of bees.  I can’t believe how much prices have increased.

Last year, I did a little swarm trapping to get back into beekeeping. I didn’t want to pay the 2016 prices for packages. Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to land a single swarm.  My hives got a lot of visits from scout bees, but the bees just weren’t impressed enough to stay.

This year I have decided that I am going to buy two packages instead of relying completely on swarm trapping.  I would prefer to catch a couple swarms, but I don’t want to risk getting “skunked” this year too.

Here in Utah, a 3# package of bees costs $120.  When I first started beekeeping, I picked up two 3# packages for $120 combined.  I don’t know whether an increased interest in beekeeping, or a decrease in the numbers of bees.  Maybe it is both.

At any rate, I am happy to get the hobby started again.  Even if it does mean draining the bank account.  Is anybody else out there is shocked by the prices? Do you think you know what is responsible?  let me know in the comments.  I’m also curious about what prices all of you are expecting to pay this year.  Let me know your thoughts.
